There are tricks for supermarket shelves

The position of commodities on supermarket or store shelves is not random. There are reasons for which ones are placed on the upper shelf and which ones are placed on the lower shelf.

High-level shelves generally hold products of smaller brands and regional brands. Because small brand manufacturers usually don’t have much budget to put their goods in a better position. These items are generally selected by local store managers, rather than being decided by the decision-makers at the supermarket headquarters. If you have a small brand you trust, go for it.

However, there are also some specialty brands or ethnic foods that will be placed on the higher shelves, and the price is not cheap at all. I expect loyal customers to buy them no matter what, so I don’t specifically consider the placement of the goods.

The middle shelf, which is the second and third shelf from the top to the bottom, is usually regarded as the central area, where best-selling products and other major brands are placed. Hot-selling products are generally placed in the center and front of the shelf, at the level of the consumer’s line of sight.

To get this sweet spot, producers sometimes have to pay supermarkets. For supermarkets, it is not profitable to put low-priced products in this area, so basically what you can see are higher-priced or profitable products.

There are also some mid-range brands whose manufacturers are willing to pay to put their products here in order to be close to famous brand products, and the prices of these brands will be much lower. Plus, you can usually find similar products at much lower prices on the shelves below the central area.

In the children’s eye-level area, products that children will like and can reach are generally placed. Taking the kids shopping instead of leaving them at home costs an average of 10% to 40% more on a store visit. If it’s unrealistic not to spend money at all, give them a lollipop, a balloon, a can of soda, some fruit, or at least let them wait quietly for you to finish shopping.

The bottom shelf generally holds the store’s own brand, non-brand name, and bulk packaged goods. Because their own brands are not much different from similar leading brands in the market, and their prices are lower, they are loved by many consumers. In fact, many brand-name products and supermarket private label manufacturers are the same. Since consumers will always find a way to find these cheap and high-quality brands, there is no need to arrange a special display location for them.
